The aftermarket regulators that we sell (which I think is the only kind out
there) will work on any Vanagon 80-91. We sell them to replace the OEM
regulator or as a retrofit into vans that never had power windows. I have
installed these myself and as long as you have the stock speaker in the door
you are fine (the power motor is moved behind the speaker area with the
aftermarket regulator). As for the problem you are having with the stock
regulator not fitting, the only thing I can think of is that the motor for
the aftermarket regulator may not work on the OEM regulator. The OEM
regulator may need the OEM motor (I have never compared these two side by
side but I am sure they are different). But as far as fitting the OEM
regulator should fit no problem in your door and as long as you fit it with
the OEM motor you should be good to go. So here are your options with
pricing:
1. Stick with aftermarket regulator and motor (comes together) for $140
2. Go with OEM regulator which we sell for $140 and also buy new OEM motor
for an additional $140.
3. Try to find these parts used (the motor would probably be OK used but the
regulators wear out with age so be careful of buying a used one as it may
not last).
Let me know if I can help you.
Thanks,

Subject: Power Window Regulator
Good Morning to all,
I have a question regarding my 89 Power Window Carat (production line late
88). The PO installed an aftermarket power window motor (bosch) and
regulator (said it was a VW compatible Caravelle).
The regulator was failing recently and then the window fell of the track,
and now I need to replace the regulator.
Seems simple but hereąs the problem. I took the van to my local NYC mechanic
who does work on VWąs and German cars, they ordered an OEM VW power window
regulator for an 89 Vanagon and they tried to fit and it did not fit for
some reason, was this possible? He said he ordered an 89 but since the van
was a late model 88 it did not fit with existing bosch motor. Possible?
The NYC mechanic said the Bosch Motor works fine, and that the PO
retrofitted the motor plate to connect to this aftermarket regulator. I
looked at it after they ripped it out and looked fine.
My question is shouldnąt an OEM regulator from any late model power window
vanagon work in the my 89 Carat? As well shouldnąt any aftermarket unit work
as well for any van from 86-91?
Do I need purchase an entirely new aftermarket motor and regulator now?
Or purchase a new OEM motor and regulator?
Does anyone know if the aftermarket units available online are any good?
TIA
Robert
