Richard, What makes them safer is that the catalysis process reduces the unburned hydrocarbon and the increase oxidation area minimizes carbon monoxide. The only toxic item is the co2. High co2 can change the ph of the blood but it causes an anxiety attack before this ever happens. A kind of cabin fever.
