The shared rear speaker ground appears to me to have ended with 1986 models. I own 2 1986 models with shared grounds and 2 1987 models with separate pairs for each rear speaker. The Bentley wiring diagrams show 1986 shared and 1987on separate. Pages 97.193 and 97.196, latest version of the vanagon Bentley.
