Sounds like you are into a fun job - heater problems? Throw away the Bentley manual - it's clear as a foggy day on how to do this.

Let's see if I get this right from memory:

- remove instrument cluster - remove radio - disconnect cig lighter - remove heater control knobs and face plate - unscrew heater controls - unbolt steering column from dash - upper and lower - remove 10mm bolts at either end of sides of dash - remove the smaller Philips screws next to the window - undo the heater pipes

At this point, with the steering wheel resting on the seat, the dash should first pull up and then out.

The heater is fun - undo the 6 screws that hold it in place so that you can get access to all sides of it. The Bentley manual doesn't tell you this. Also a good wood chisel is all you need to break the 1 billion tabs on the heater box. Save those metal tabs.

Have some good cleaning supplies to remove the dust from under the dash and the years of crap sucked in by the heating system.

If you are into saving money. The A1 Series VW heaters are the same (Rabbit / Scirocco / Cabriolet etc).

I can't find how to remove the dash board in the Bently manual...anyone know which page it is on? I've already removed a bunch of bolts but I like their removal/installation guides because they tell you exactly what you need to do.

Thx,

FT
