Subject: exciter wire?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I've recently had another alternator installed--the second one this year--and a new battery. Last week I had a dead battery while on the road. A local mechanic, after spending three days tracing what appears to be an intermittent charging problem, gave the van back with the admonition that *it's working now, but I don't like that alternator.* He did say that the exciter wire to the alternator should be carrying twelve volts but it isn't, and after driving around with no problems for a few days, yesterday I had a dead battery again.

The original alternator was replaced while on the road a couple hundred miles from home, so I didn't want to drive back up there just for a replacement under warranty. Now I'm suspecting that the problem may not be the alternator at all. Does anyone have any ideas?

TIA.
