Subject:      Thinner head bolt washers?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed

Hello;

I'm planning on bolting the head back on my diesel early next week. As several members of this group corroborated, my use of spacers off the OLD head shouldn't be used on the NEW head. Diesel owners take note! Nobody knew to warn me because apparently it isn't common to have the spacers, though I have seen references to them on other groups.

Anyway, since I popped the top two threads out of the block, and there appear to have been seven threads grabbing each bolt, if I toss out the spacer that will leave five.

Is five enough? What if I took a grinder and carefully cut the captive head bolt washer (you can't slide 'em off) and replaced it with a thinner washer, giving me six threads worth of purchase. The washer I'm speaking of is about 2 mm, the one I'm thinking of cutting away as about 4.

A thread here and a thread there adds up...

Jim
