Subject: Propane heaters -- be careful!

This was in the paper today and I thought I'd post it as a reminder. I see a few stories like this every year and I *don't* want to see this happen to any list members.

Remember, there is really no such thing as an unvented propane heater that's safe to use in an enclosed space. If you *must* use an unvented "platcat" style heater in your van, at least leave a window cracked for fresh air.

Manistee -- Propane fumes kill 2 anglers in van

October 7, 2003

Two anglers on a church outing died after being overcome by fumes from a propane heater as they took a break inside a van, authorities said.

David B. Arnold, 23, of Bronson and 14-year-old Cory McCurley of Coldwater were found unconscious around 3 a.m. Sunday. Efforts to resuscitate them failed, and they were pronounced dead at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee.

A third person, 17-year-old Jeremiah Teller of Bronson, was revived and is expected to recover.

Manistee County Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski said the three were on a fishing trip near Tippy Dam, a popular fishing spot 3 miles east of Brethren, and took a propane heater to their van. (Associated Press)
