They are noisy. But make sure you have the air intake snorkel all put together. It helps a lot.

Mine runs just to the left of the LED, usually with the needle just touching the edge of it. But there are a lot of variations in these temperature senders. (Also, I'm told for some years the temp senders for the glow plugs and for the temp gauge are different. Make sure you don't have them swapped.)

The only way to be sure is to either install a calibrated aftermarket temp gauge, or buy an infrared temperature gun.
