The only thing that I farm out is the alignment and transmission work on my Vanagons. The local Kal-Tire does the alignments and I will be sending a set of gearboxes to AA Transaxle in WA State very soon. Kal-Tire has monkeys running the show there, most monkeys have been there for a while so they know what they are doing. I am always present when they do the alignment and I have always been more than happy with the results. AA Transaxle is not run by monkeys rather people who know a lot more about transaxles that I ever will. I have recommend them to many people and people always thank me for the recommendation afterwards. Personally I would try to find a local guy who know import vehicles and to try to stay away from the franchise places that are run by monkeys. The little guy doesn't have the big corporation to fall back on when they screw up so they usually know what they're getting into before they start. I know a lot of us do what repair work we can on our Vanagons. I am wondering where you go when you are not able to do the repair. For instance, can Midas do a brake job? Can Sears do a front end alignment? Is the Vanagon so specialized that a franchise shop will screw it up or can you rely on them to do miscellaneous tasks like this? My VW guy put brakes on my Vanagon and screwed them up royally. I'm not sure I want him to do anything but engine work in the future.
