Subject: Westy Hatch Screen

I have ordered a screen for the rear hatch. I am getting it made at a local
sporting goods/camping/hiking/ etc. outlet called Kirkham's
(http://www.kirkhams.com/)in Salt Lake. They will make it with their
excellent Springbar tent canvas and screen materials, and put a zipper
vertically down the middle and "T" that one into a horizontal zipper across
the bottom for easy access yet great ventilation. They are charging me
$55.00. I have no personal investment in this venture but thought some of
you may be interested in the information. I'll have one made for the sliding
door side entry next but not sure of the "snaps" application. By the way,
they make canvas luggage carriers for GoWesty which go on the Eurovans. They
are accustomed to fabricating special orders and have that flexability. I
dealt with a man named Anthony in that fabrication department. He was real
helpful, came out to the van and did the measuring and even the suggestion
of the zippers for access.
Since they are making this one for me and it will be of standard van/camper
size specs, I'm sure they'll be able to manufacture more without any size
problems. I'll be going back there before they put the snaps on to be sure
they have the van at their disposal to make a perfect fit regarding snap
spacing. Their standard snaps fit those on the hatch perfectly. I'll let you
know what the finished product is like and post pix.
By the way, the canvas material is very pliable and is not affected by heat
or cold, and is water proof. I have a 9'X7' tent made by them that I got in
'84 and it has always been water-tight, very servicable, very tough and
doesn't mold, but then I've taken good care of it too. I sometimes use it
for a side tent as it fits/stows in the rear of the upper bed area with the
top down. The canvas and screens have never developed holes or tears and
I've replaced the door screen zipper (most often used one on the tent) once
in that 19 years.
