Incidentally, there's really only one way to "trash" an ohmmeter, and that's by connecting it to a powered circuit. When a meter is on the ohms function you need to make sure there is no other power in the circuit. In this case that's not a problem because you're testing the sensor with it disconnected from the wiring harness.
