Although you're right that Click & Clack (the cartalk bros.) don't think highly of our vans, i did hear one of them talk about how one morning in boston at a stop light, an early '60's rusted out bus roared up next to him. He said that the nostalgia alone was enough to make him offer to buy the van from the driver on the spot. The driver declined, and happily drove away. They don't think very highly of any VW's, btw, as i've heard them regularly say how unreliable even the brand-new ones are. The part of this caller's comments i found funniest were when she was asking about the possible subaru forester they were looking at as a replacement for their westy...she said something along the lines of "ok, so it's a great car, but will my husband still be able to go out and tinker w/it...because that if he can't, he would be devestated!" just shows how addicting the vanagons/buses are. Cartalk is a fantastic show for anyone whose never heard it. -james '83.5 CHC
>For those of you that don't listen to Car Talk regularly be forewarned >these guys do NOT speak kindly of the the old VW buses. I've heard them say >that in a VW bus your legs are the first line of defense. They even listed >them #10 on their all-time list of bad cars. (the Yugo was #1.) But I don't >hold it against them. They apparently aren't made of the same cloth as the >rest of us. They value things like ABS, air bags power steering, safety, >reliability etc. They don't go for performance, either. They think highly >of the Lexus and Toyota (yuck!). But they are car smart and very funny. The >reason I mentioned this particluar show was I thought the woman caller was >cute because she and her family loved their 84 Vanagon and were going >through the same problem that we went through this list a little while >back. Namely, what newer vehicle can we buy that would have the same spirit >as the Vanagon? And, as we all know, there is nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. >Zero. I was waiting for her to say she was considering a Honda Element >which is about the closest I can come up with and it still falls short in >the seating. > >Tom Brobst _________________________________________________________________ Get McAfee virus scanning and cleaning of incoming attachments.
