For those who own my South African Vanagon trailer hitch and matching
bike rack, I discovered an additional use for its mounting adapter when
camping this summer - as an external table holder for the Vanagon
tables.

I leave the cylindrical receptacle that the bike rack slides into on my
hitch all the time, so I can quickly push the bike rack onto it whenever
I need it. This summer it occurred to me that the receptacle is about
the size as the one in the Vanagon that accepts the front or rear table
leg. So I tried sliding my table and leg into it. While the receptacle
was just slightly too large in diameter, it was still perfectly
functional as an external table mount. I wedged a butter knife from my
silverware drawer into it to fill the extra gap (although it wasn't
really necessary). While a table mounted outside the van is not always
useful, I ended up using it there more frequently than I do when it is
between the seats (where is mostly ends up being a surface to put
various junk that we really should be putting away :-).
