If the Bus is moving forward and it is in a forward gear, then you are tightening, not loosening the bolts. You need to remove the 3 outer bolts. The inner holds the adapter to the crankshaft. You will need a puller to remove it.

Howdy,

I am pulling the cooling tin off of my air cooled 1982 Westy with the engine in place. I am at the point of pulling the fan (not the fan attached to the alternator, but the big one in the fan housing) and am not sure how to proceed. The bolts are pretty tight and when I put the wratchet on them the engine turns over and i can hear a lot of noise coming from the tranny when the bus tries to lurch foward. I am afraid that I am damaging something. What is the best way to remove this fan? Thanks, Jake
