An extra battery with an inverter would work fine, and if you only use a
laptop it should last a full day.  Driving the van for an hour or so should
charge the RV battery back up enough to run the laptop for many hours.

This would be a lot nicer than a separate generator.

Depending on your laptop, there may be a 12VDC cigarette adapter/charger
available that would be more efficient than going the inverter route.

They sell 12v adapters and high capacity laptop battery power packs that you
could charge up in your house or at a campground, cafe etc.

You could also get a newer, more fuel efficient laptop...
