An extra battery with an inverter would work fine, and if you only use a laptop it should last a full day. Driving the van for an hour or so should charge the RV battery back up enough to run the laptop for many hours.

This would be a lot nicer than a separate generator.

Depending on your laptop, there may be a 12VDC cigarette adapter/charger available that would be more efficient than going the inverter route. Check http://lindelectronics.com/ They sell 12v adapters and high capacity laptop battery power packs that you could charge up in your house or at a campground, cafe etc.

You could also get a newer, more fuel efficient laptop...
