Subject: Electric Power Steering Pumps
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Howdy From Texas,

I am doing an engine conversion in my '87 GL. The Vanagon has power steering, but I haven't been able to rig up a traditional belt driven power steering pump on the engine. BenT, among others, have mentioned the possibility of an electric power steering pump. Ben thought that maybe at some point Subaru had used an electric pump. Does anyone know anything about the (especially, year/make/model)? Are there any other cars or other applications that have used an electric pump for the power steering?

I have done some research on the web. It seems that all of the modern electrically driven system are highly complicated, computer controlled devices that are integrated with either the steering rack or the steering column. This won't work for me. I just need a power steering pump that can provide high pressure hydraulic fluid to the traditional Vanagon power steering rack.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Bruce
