If you start with a rust free van, and use good sense in applying rust-preventive compounds to the underside, and make sure to seal-up or wax the seams if they are splitting, and wash it fairly frequently, you will be fine.

If you have rust already, then fix it! Salt will make it rust faster. If you need a temporary fix to make it until spring, (when you will be able to fix the rust), shoot some Boeshield T-9 onto the rust. It's somewhat similar to the Krown stuff, I think. It is a spray that penetrates rust and leaves a waxy coating. It doesn't repair rust, but it stops it cold. Even stopped the rust on my anvil. Good stuff, easy to use. Lasts a few months or so before you need to shoot it again. Learn about it at boeshield.com. Avaliable lots of places.
