There is no crumple zone. We use other vehicle's crumple zones in a collision. The front of the vanagon is designed to remain intact. In addition to the frame ends and the bumper, there are also other reinforced "roll cage" areas in the front.

Someone on the list put out a link to a Swedish (?) insurance website that rated the Vanagon pretty high in real-world collisions. Anybody remember that site?
