And, admittedly, I'm one of those idiots. I open the sliding side windows a few inches, the pop top vent, and have a "sniffer" near the floor. 4 years of this and no incidents ... yet. I still get livable van temps in the 40's/50's when it's in the teens outside.

... mounted it on the main battery bulkhead, facing the cabin.

That warning you mentioned is on the side of the heater itself and is very specific about size of ventilation required for safe operation. Bob Stevens
