Now that's a clever idea, maybe I'll buy a deep well socket just for
this, and similar, purpose and modify it. Good Idea.
Someone else mentioned testing with a test light or an ohmmeter. My
neighbor has an ohmmeter but neither one of us really know how to use
it. This might be a good opportunity for both of us to learn something
but I don't want to trash my neighbor's tool even if he doesn't use it.
How do I use an ohmmeter to test this?
Thanks much,

I made a tool to remove the TempII sensor. I took a deep well 13mm
socket
and, using a rod saw blade (one of those "cut in any direction" blades
you
chuck into a hacksaw frame) cut a wide slot all the way down the well.
This
allows you to feed the wire out of the slot as you fit the socket on the
sensor. Before removing to old one and installing a new one, why don't
you
check the resistance of the old one, in place, when it's hot?
You can't tell if the old one's bad by using a new one without removing
the
old one and installing the new one.

Oh no, this sounds like something I could really screw up, another guy
mentioned that I need to be careful not to strip out the threads. This
suggests to me that it might be easy to screw that up. I will have to be
careful.
Let me make sure I understand this correctly. If I just unplug the wire
from the sensor and plug it into the new one without removing the old
one or installing the new one that I can test to see if the engine will
start when it's warm? I wonder if the parts guy will take the part back
if it's not the sensor :)
Thanks again,

If I remember it right, it is a 13mm size. The head is real thin and
the
plate can be in the way sometimes. You just need patience. Even an
open
end wrench would do but it takes a day to turn it out and the new one
in.
But you can also try to see if it really is the fault by just hooking up
the
new one and see how the engine behaves.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Yes it is air cooled, I took a look at the thing and
I still don't know how the heck to get it off. I will try a long socket,
I do have some deep sockets but I don't know if they are deep enough.
You don't, by chance, recall what size the thing is do you? Maybe this
will be a good excuse to buy some more tools :)

If it is an air cooled engine, Yes. That is the one residing on the #3
cylinder, top left corner. Not easy to remove but it will come out.
Try to
preserve the single wire because the unit might be perfect and something
else could be the fault. Also the new one has to be installed such a
way
that the wire is not hurt. I used a long socket that could house the
wire
inside without being wringed and torn.

I have a similar problem with my 82, where is the temp2 sensor? Is that
the same as the temp head sensor?

It could very likely be the Temp2 sensor, a cheap replacement to try
before doing expensive "fixes".
