Subject: Whining trans/buzzing through shift knob
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

I am contemplating my options with my rebuilt trans, which has developed a leak it seems, in addition to the noise it has had for a few years. The noise started within 5-10k kms of rebuild, possibly soon after switching from dino oil put in by the shop, to Amsoil synthetic gear oil. It is most pronounced in 2nd gear as a loud whine, but also causes the shift knob to rattle/buzz at highway speeds in 4th. The R&P and all bearings were replaced during the rebuild, but not the syncros as they were ok, I was told. It seems to shift fine, although 2nd gear could be better. I tend to shift slowly and try to match revs, so this doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that this noise could be the sound of my brand new $600 R&P set being chewed to bits, or other similarly expensive stuff. The whine I have heard in other vans, but not the buzzing at speed. Anyone else?

Just trying to get more info before I take it to the shop for an opinion.

Thanks.
