From the collective wisdom of this list I have "learned" that on all vanagons the alternator does not charge till the van is reved a bit, then the LED alt/battery light goes out when the alt startes charging the battery. Some say this is so that in (German) winter, the van can start more easily without the drag of the alternator. ie the van will run off the battery for a few minutes till warm, then recharge the battery when driving.
