Makes you wonder why VW didn't stick with their proven air-cooled engine
concept and just make improvements to that design based on evolving
state-of-the-art in air-cooled engines. Many small aircraft are still
powered by air-cooled engines, why not post 1983 VW Vanagon
campers?

Easy answer, actually. Emissions. Air cooled engines can't
maintain the tighter tolerances of a water cooled engine and require more
room between parts for temperature expansion and contraction. That
makes for a lot less potential to control the fuel burn and reduce
emissions while maintaining (or increasing, in the best designs) power
output for a given displacement.

The motorcycle world (where I'm most familiar these days) has been
undergoing this transformation for years. There are fewer and fewer
air cooled engines around. When they can (reasonably) sell as many
bikes as they want to make, why did Harley bother to build the V-Rod
(engined designed in part by Porshe, by the way)? It's a
fore-runner of the day when they'll have to disappoint the faithful and
cease offering an air-cooled big twin. BMW has moved toward a more
highly evolved air/oil cooled engine since 1993 for its big twins, but
it's only a matter of time before that engine is completely superceded as
well.

Cheers.
