89 Vanagon. I think it is an alternator problem but in case I'm wrong I'd rather find out before I install the rebuilt one...

Battery Idiot light came on last week while idling. I hit the gas and it went out. I reached back to the stove where I have another battery guage (Full/Medium/low) and it was on medium.

Next day the light was persistently on, this time the guage was on low. I did my best to keep all accesories off, and made it home at dusk.

The alternator belt is intact, although it is smooth and cracked.

I bought another alternator yesterday but before I get into it, are there other components I should check to save time and money if it is not the alternator? I think the battery is overall ok.
