Subject: weird power at speed under load fluctuation thingy
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I've had the fortunate opportunity to either ride in or drive the same '84 westy since it was new. Something that i've noticed through its life (well, more so since i've been driving it for the past 10 years) is how load dependent the power is on the highway. What i mean is, if you've had your foot in it, and then let off for a little bit (ie. going over a long grade), there isn't much "pep" when you get on the gas again. Compared to a nice flat stretch at the same speed, requiring little throttle, once you get on it, the van does too. The only difference between these two scenarios being the earlier load requirements.

The stock 1.9 showed this, and i kind of took pride in how i could "feel" the van to give it just enough throttle so it would have that pep again after i got over the hill, while my father just believed in the "mash it some more" technique. My new 2.3 engine really shows this, though. To the point that i can accellerate up a reasonably good grade one moment, and then the next have that power fading again...

What gives? Has anyone else experienced this phenomena? I'm wondering if it simply case pressure, but i don't really know much about that...

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter, -Damon
