After taking everything apart, cleaning it up and putting it all back
together, it worked. After my inspection of the resistor (mine is the AC
type); it does appear very cracked and possibly close to the end of it's
life, so I may replace it anyway. The VW dealer sells this for $146.10 but
I'm hopeful I can find it somewhere else for less.
