Steve, my man, have you pulled the cooling fan temperature switch connector and placed a jumper from the hot terminal to each of the other terminals? This will tell you if the fan and the resistor are OK. When a Vanagon is moving at all, even up a grade, the fan should not come on and the temperature gauge should read normally. Do you have any coolant leaks? Is your pressure cap all right? Did you remember to close the bleeder valve on top of the thermostat housing after the last time you bled the cooling system? Any of these minor things will cause a van to run abnormally hot.
