Yes its been done. Big topic like 4 months ago you might want to check archives and do search for topic: "Vanagon alternator too weak for Optimas" which isnt true, the vanagons alternator is pleanty strong, its just the voltage drop accross that 14' wire plus the bosch voltage regulator is set close to 13.4 volts.
