This does not sound normal...but I don't have enough experience in this area to tell you what's wrong.

Worst case: You score the spindle (actually, this is a syncro isn't it? Guess it'd be the stub axle, then) and have to replace that, too.

Well, I guess the absolute worst case would be it seizing up at 70 mph, but that's probably unlikely.
