That's much more recent-era stuff than the Vanagon ECU -- it's just a Bosch
Jetronic (L for the Digijet, K for the Digifant?  brain farts) system with
perhaps a bit of "cost engineering" by VW.  The Digifant takes care of
ignition timing directly while the Digijet still uses a mechanical/vacuum
advance/retard system.  Digifant idle stabilizing is by regulating input
air; Digijet by advancing and retarding the timing signals from the Hall
sender to the ignition module.

There is an "instant reset" when the system panics because of funny AFM
inputs or possibly other things -- just turn the key off for a
second.  There are no stored error codes; in fact there are no error codes
period, AFAIK.
