The e-brake lever/handle was greatly improved during the 1985 model year. The newer style works much better for holding the vehicle on a slope and is easier and more comfortable to operate. The newer style bolts right into any year Vanagon. The parking brake cable adjusting nut must be lubed and loosed up a ways first. Then the cable needs to be adjusted/tightened after the new lever is installed. I have done this to a bunch of 82/83/84 Vanagons and the owners love it.
