Herman, The Milepost is a great resource for the trip, and we would be more than glad to offer assistance on your travel plans as well. My sometimes SO(we will get it figured out someday), our 8 month old son Colin and I made the trip in August. It was a fly/drive for us. We flew to Sacramento, picked up her 87 Westy Syncro, and drove home to Anchorage. I have lived in AK for 34+ years and she was born here, so we are very familiar with your route and destination. Before I can advise about vehicle choice I will need to know more about what you want to do activity wise, and what your definitions for rough roads, inclement weather, etc, are. For shops along the Alaska Highway, I have to recommend John's Auto in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. They know vanagons, and they really came through for us when our clutch failed there. Should you make the trip and have problems along the way contact me, I was able to get our clutch shipped from Anchorage for less than it would have cost i n Whitehorse, and it got there just as fast. You should not need extra gas cans, we do actually have gas stations up here, and along the highway. Pmail me with info about your family, ages, desired activities, amount of time available, etc, and I will aid in anyway I can, we can probably even meet up when you are up here if you like. I hope to bike the Denali Park road next summer. This offer of trip assistance is open to any list members planning a trip to AK
