Gauges are worse than useless anywhere out of the driver's line-of-sight; this includes the middle of the dashboard. You can DIE because you looked over there. Down is even worse. Useful items in a console? Lidded bin for tapes? Money slots? Sunnies holder (dustproof)? Hidden CD-changer?
