Just did this with a 1.9 wasserboxer engine (now being converted to a 1.9TD). Basically I used a lot of HOT water and let it run through the cooling system catching what came out the other side in a big bucket. I did this for about 30 minutes and at the end there was no oil in the system at all or at least no oil that was coming free.

Hi all,

Does anyone have a recommendation for how to clean out the cooling system on an '84 Westy while the engine is out being rebuilt? This engine failed by breaking a head stud and there was coolent leakage into the oil as well as oil leakage into the coolent.

I am rebuilding the engine and I will remove the radiator and take it to the shop for cleaning/testing but I not sure how to get the oil/water/emulsion out of the hoses and pipes under the vehicle.

When I took 'auto mechanics' in high school we had a device called a "Zoo Flush Gun" which was a nozzle device to which was attached a water source as well as a compressed air source. The output was a high velocity, high volume water froth. This would probably be great for this application, assuming that I disconnect the radiator and heater cores and flush them seperately. But I don't know where to find such a device.
