For years I've been using a 50/50 mix of 'Simple Green' sprayed (pump up hand sprayer) on a *slightly* warm engine. Let it set for 20-30 minutes, spray on some more to re wet & wash off with just a garden hose sprayer. Works great on 'normal' underhood grunge, but you're gonna have to scrape off heavy grease or baked on deposits first.
