This is a message to the Official Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Test Driver.

Your first task is complete and a success. Prepared to enter phase II of the piston quality comparison test. You may begin anytime.

Upon activation of Piston Test #2, please remove the letters "side" from between "Road" and "Haus".

Drive safely and good luck..

Volks,

Huge thanks to all that sent VW shop and/or contact info for Rapid City, SD.

Was able to get the RoadHaus towed to,

Import Service Inc 3280 West Chicago Street Rapid City, SD 57702

Seems like an excellent shop ... lots of Vanagon carcasses around and helpful folks.

Unfortunately the breakdown was pretty major .... Number One Piston blew up.

Looks similar to what happened in Phoenix a month or so ago.

We thought the cause then was a "too Lean" condition. So a manual fuel pressure regulator was installed.

The engine ran great till today.

Current plan ... replace the existing pistons with 94 mm OE German Pistons and sleeves (have them sitting on the shelf in Phoenix).

Which pretty much (but not completely) takes the 2.2L engine back to a stock 2.1L configuration.

I'll be camped out in front of the shop thru the weekend and hopefully back on the road by Tuesday or Wednesday.

So if anyone is passing thru Rapid City ... stop by and say hi!

all roads lead to VW shops,
