Hello Listees: The patient in question is an '86 Westy with 2.1L engine. The engine has low miles on a rebuild, but was parked several years, and run only occasionally. I bought the van as a project, got it running, and drove it home about 10 miles. (It ran okay at the time) I parked it, and started it occasionally. The last time I tried to start it, it would only start if I poured some gas into the intake, and then it ran very poorly. I also noticed that there was suddenly a bad oil leak under the driver's side pushrod tin. I removed the tin, to discover that the 2nd pushrod tube from the front is badly bent (30 degrees?) and kinked. I removed the valve cover, and it looks like the side of the pushrod is touching the edge of the head. I have a Bentley, and have looked at the parts involved. I have a collapsable pushrod tube on hand. I have replaced engines, trannies, waterpumps, etc, but have never adjusted valves or dealt with heads. Questions: What got stuck that caused the pushrod to bend? How do I diagnose the faulty part(s) and additional damage, before I replace the pushrod and tube? To remove the bent pushrod, can I simply remove the spring clip of the related rocker arm, and slide it over, or do I have to unbolt and remove the shaft holding all four rocker arms? I believe that the basic procedure is: remove the pushrod, remove the tube, install the collapsable tube & seals, install the pushrod (making sure it is centered in the lifter), and then adjust the valve clearance (one turn, two turns, or .006?) by turning the set screw on top of the rocker arm. What am I missing? I don't want to have a re-occurance of this problem, by overlooking the cause. Is there a website or write up specifically covering this subject? Any advice is appreciated.
