the problem is more then likely the lower cable from the spindle to the black box. to check it reach under the bus and grab the cable housing ( black ). and try pushing it as hard as you can toward the spindle. what happens is the cable wears out the black outer sleeve over time and when you turn it pulls the inners out. from there you could also disconnect the cable from the box and spin the wheel and look at the cable this will tell you if it is just broken. hope this helps. my 85 did the same thing also west coast metric is starting to carry cables and such for most vws so you can always contact them or flaps. c-ya Jonce
