I know it looks ridiculous, but stick it in the jack point on the van and all will become clear. The design of the jack point keeps the "folding brace" horizontal, and the pivot allows the jack to stay more or less vertical while the van tilts as it's jacked up. That said, it's not the most stable jack in the world. Bus Depot sells an improved scissor jack that uses the same jack point if you're not comfortable with it.
