No diode? That's a no-no.
Solar battery chargers need the diode. Anytime the output voltage
from the solar panel is less than the battery voltage it will draw current
from the battery. At night, or when it's not sunny the panel is being
a load on your battery. Kills your battery, and not good for the panel
either.
