Subject: why is my idle screwed up?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

In my 84 Vanagon GL I replaced the long block a few months back. I used my existing injectors, intake, distributor...in other words all the stuff on the top of the engine. The motor runs great with one exception. When it's started cold it idles real fast, around 3000rpm+, for several minutes. As it warms up it starts varying between fast and normal speeds and then it goes to normal. (Almost anyway. It stills seems to be hunting more than normal.) Using the old process of elimination I replaced the auxiliary air valve with the one from the new long block and I got the same problem so I figured that it was not the culprit. I tried shunting the idle speed control connectors but that was no help either. I also went through and tightened up any potential intake leaks and cleaned up the ground connections. Nothing. At this point, though, it does appear the idle will go to normal if I pinch off the hose from the idle control valve. So, I took the one that's off the car and looked at it. I connected 12VDC and it didn't do anything. I can see right through it from the inlet to the oulet. How this is supposed to work? I get 30ohms across the terminals. Anyone have any other ideas? Think it could be the distributor? I forget if I used the new one or the old one. (Brain fart) If all else fails I'll try swithching that next. Thanks
