Mike, One thing you did not mention. If this is not for a EE or computer geek class what school project class is this for? Having a world of education in both those areas myself, I'm always intreaged as to what other ways schools can classify this field.

> Hi all. I have a school project that I have to complete in the next month using a small microcontroller called the "Basic Stamp". I intend to hook it up to a 12 channel/12 bit A/D converter that will essentially do what Darrell's Tool does. One difference: this little tool will spew out it's data into a laptop where it will populate an Excel spreadsheet for graphing purposes. I also will send some of the digital signals there as well as a "human activated" trigger (an old remote starter switch) to allow a spike to be placed on the graph as a marker. My van currently runs like dog poo. When the hesitation kicks in, I pull the trigger to mark the data where I want to look. The spreadsheet will also graph the delta between a few of the AFM (pins 17 & 21), O2 (9 & 2), and The HAL (8&6 and 18&6), temp II (10&6). A time stamp, RPM, and weather or not the FI firing trigger is currently active. > > > > However, I'm not a computer geek nor a "double E" so any help anyone feels they can lend to this endeavor would be greatly appreciated. The code used on the stamp will be made freeware and I'll do a write up on how to build this thing if Mr. Bell will be so kind as to put it on his website. The overall idea is that the user can very easily make graphs in Excel to view periods of data. IE watch the voltage changes on your tempII vs. RPM vs. time vs. marker points, etc. There's really a lot you can do once the numbers are in the PC. > > > > Where I need some support... > > > > 1. I see there are 2 pins (8&18 with ground on 6). How can these be converted to an RPM number? I think one/both of these ends up in that little pigtail by the alternator but I'm not that familiar with it. > > > > 4. I seem to remember years ago someone said on the list that they had contacted someone at Bosch regarding the Digifant I system. There is a cool graph in the Digifant training manual that derives timing advancement from a graph of RPM vs. engine load. Load is plotted on an incremental 0 to 256 scale. Load is calculated via a magical function that uses values from the "...load, speed, and coolant temps...". I would love to know if there is a pin somewhere in the ECM that will give that magical 0-256 digital signal. Anyone know how to contact someone within Bosch? > > > > I intend to document much of this both for my class instructor and for the benefit of those on the list that are geek enough to want to either build their own or maybe (dare I dream) improve both the stamp code or the quality of the spreadsheet. There are really infinite possibilities for designing cool graphs with the supplied data. > > > > If anyone has a suggestion, support, or questions, feel free to drop me mail or call anytime (I'm single!) > > > > Mike Ray > > 703.862.3046 > > `87 Westy Eeyore > > > > > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > Protect your identity with Yahoo!
