Hey Lorraine,

Not sure if it is the same size. The last time I
needed one, I went to the auto parts store and
purchased an o-ring of size 1 1/4" outside diameter by
1/8" thickness. The reason for all of the RTV is that
this o-ring is similar to the o-ring used on later
model vanagons. However, the later model is a bit
smaller. I think the early ones are no longer
available, so folks substitute the later ones - the
RTV helps make-up the difference. The size I
recommend is slightly larger than the original and
causes a nice tight, no-leak fit. When purchsing,
ensure the o-ring is heat resistant.

Not sure if new are still available - used certainly
are.

Yes. The tube must be loosened and pushed out of the
way. It does not need to be removed from the car. I
guess you could leave it in place, but then you have
the difficulty of ensuring the o-ring properly seats
while also trying to line up the two bolts that attach
the waterpump housing.

No, remove it.
