I am in EXACTLY the same situation you ase in. I took the Vanagon to the mechanics on Friday, after losing power on Wednesday/Thursday and subsequently blowing black smoke. They said the AFM was bad (fortunately, I had a spare.) They are convinced that the spare AFM fixed the problem, but the van still feels lees "powerful" than before. (power is a relative term when dealing with Vanagons, I know...) I have a new Temp II sensor and pretty new O2 sensor (like you, a generic BOSCH that was spliced. Maybe I'll check my splice.) The mechanic said that if the Van stil runs rich then I should think about a new (used) ECU. He says the cheapest he can get is $450. I know I can do better than that. (I'm losing faith in this particular mechanic, who seems to be throwing parts at the problem, which I can do just as well.) Anyway, let me know what you find.
