I wonder if this is the reason that, when I got new tires installed at Sears last weekend (for my daily driver, not the Westy), they installed valve stems with a metal shank around them. Perhaps the growing popularity of plastic wheel covers has been chewing up a lot of valve stems? Never seen these before, except as flashy chrome accessory add-ons at the auto parts store. Even came with metal screw-on caps. And my car doesn't even HAVE wheel covers ...
