I guess it would be clever . . . if it would work. That large blob of grease would have to be most of the contents of a 25 lb. bucket because the bushing is not installed into a blind hole.

I've use this technique to remove all manner of bushings and bearings installed in BLIND holes. It works admirably well. But, the fit between the dowel and the bushing or bearing has to be a close sliding fit and the dowel has to be POPPED with a hammer in order to create a hydraulic impulse of enough magnitude to work. A hardwood dowel will even suffice as long as it is properly sized. If the fit is not close enough, you'll know it from the taste of grease in your mouth and your bleared vision.

Why not simply beg, borrow, steal or fabricate a blind hole extractor? I made one from a piece of drill rod and a cap screw. For the few times I need it, I didn't even have to harden it. Admittedly, an engine lathe made quick work of its fabrication, but, had I not had a lathe, a file and a bench vise would have also provided me with a tool which could be used without the peril of bitching up the clutch housing.
