As has often been demonstrated here, placing any kind of objective value on a Westy is nearly impossible. Some view them as mere transportation appliances, to be bought and sold as simple commodities, while others see them as members of the family, to be cherished and enjoyed and cared for, regardless of cost. You need to decide just exactly what your Westy means to you.

As you say, you cannot foresee how any new job you find will affect your current ability to walk/bike/bus wherever you need to go. You may find selling the van to be a "Pyrrhic victory", generating quick cash to get you through some lean times, only to later find a job to which you then have no transportation.

Sounds like selling your Westy is a short-term solution to what could be a long-term problem: cash flow. What similar or equal short-term sacrifices is your wife willing to make for the sake of your mutual economic health? Are there other areas in your collective financial situation which could be adapted to generate short-term savings, in order to avoid long-term regrets?

Personally, I would eat a lot of Ramen noodles and PBJ's to avoid selling my Westy, only to then find a job which allowed me to easily afford the beloved Westy I already sold ...

Good luck on your decisions!
