It is possible that the gauge is not reading properly. I have the gauges themselves go bad, (I have replaced 6 in the past 2 years). If the fan comes on, then you know the engine is hot. If the fan comes on and the gauge is still reading low, than the gauge is a problem.

I have just the opposite problem. Gauge reads very low. Never gets above 1/4 at the hottest. Heat feels decent, but in deep winter falls a little short for all that air space. I can cover the entire radiator with cardboard all summer and it still barely gets to 1/2. Of course, the radiator fan rarely runs. I'm wondering if it's actually running too cool for best operation.

Had to do a hose replacement summer '02. Could incorrect bleeding cause under-heating rather than over-heating?

Thanks,
