That sounds a little strange Frank. What you are proposing is that the waterpump is enabling air to be sucked in. And this is happening to a presuurized system, where any leak wuold allow water to escape out.

I'll be surprised if this solves the problem. I would lean more towards the upper o-ring on the cylinder failing, enabling compression to get into the cooling system.

Please provide the answer when you have it.
