Subject: Syncro for Sale in Arcata, CA - Rip Off!

I drove by the "F" Street Garage this afternoon in Arcata and saw an '86 Syncro Vanagon I've seen around town many times before but this time with a "For Sale" sign in the window. It's a real beater, bashed up and rusty on almost every square inch, with things bolted to the outside of it. I thought it looked like it might make a good parts van, depending on the mileage of coarse. So I called "F" St. to see if they knew how much the owner wanted for it. I was completely floored when the guy who answered, so casually said, $6000.00. He went on to say that this vehicle had excellent running gear and I can't remember his exact wording but made some comment about it being "redinged", like this was a good thing. When I expressed my disbelief in this asking price, he suggested I stop wasting his time and hung up on me. Nice guy!

This seems to be a major problem here in Humboldt County. All the VW mechanics I've meet or heard of here, are thieves and/or hacks. This is why I don't trust any mechanic here and have resorted to doing everything myself. The old saying, "if you want it done right,...

I sure hope this greedy dude doesn't get a dime for his parts-mobile, Syncro or not.

-Steven Dodson Kneeland, CA "Inga" the 87 Syncro
